Community Practitioners – Biodiversity

The following Community Practitioners are working on seagrass associated Biodiversity recovery from restoration programmes in Europe:

Prof. Dr. Laura Govers
Rijksuniversiteit Groningen & Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research.
Project Affiliation:
Laura is working with seed based Nanozostera noltii restoration methods in the Wadden Sea, and with transplant based Nanozostera noltii methods in the Wadden Sea, Veerse Meer, Grevelingenmeer and Oosterschelde, Netherlands. Laura is also working with Nanozostera noltii transplants in the Étang de Berre and in the Parc naturel marin du Bassin d’Arcachon, France.

Dr. Nicolas Mayot
GIPREB
Project Affiliation:
Nicolas is working with both seed based and transplant based Nanozostera noltii restoration methods in the Étang de Berre, France.

Bárbara Ondiviela
IHCantabria

Project Affiliation:
Bárbara is a marine ecologist and her research focuses on the ecology of intertidal seagrasses and the use of remote sensing based techniques to improve our understanding of coastal ecosystems. Bárbara has devoted much of her research to investigating the spatial and temporal dynamics and ecological functions of the seagrasses Zostera marina and Nanozostera noltii.

Katherine Knight
The Scottish Marine Environmental Enhancement Fund

Project Affiliation:
Katherine works on the biodiversity associated with Zostera marina and Nanozostera noltii seagrass meadows. Katherine is working in an number of sites around Scotland which are part of SMEEF Seagrass Meadows Scotland programme.

Arnaud Boulenger
Université de Liège & STARESO
Project Affiliation:
Arnaud is working with transplant based Posidonia oceanica restoration methods in the West coast of Corsica. He also participated in a sod based Posidonia oceanica restoration project in Monaco. Arnaud works on developing suitable operational restoration methods based on the evaluation of structural, physiological, biochemical and microbiological indicators of the transplanted cuttings.

Nicole Foster
Centre d´Estudis Avançats de Blanes, Spain (CEAB-CSIC)
Project Affiliation:
Nicole uses molecular methods (eDNA) to monitor biodiversity in seagrass meadows – both spatially and through time – to develop restoration baselines and measure success, particularly in Posidonia oceanica meadows’

Katharina Kesy
University of Greifswald, Germany

Project Affiliation:
Katharina studies microbial diversity within restored and natural seagrass habitats in the southern Baltic Sea, Germany, as part of the SeaStore project. Using different omics approaches, she focuses on microbiome – seagrass interactions and how microorganisms can aide in developing indicators for healthy seagrass meadows.
