Ria de Aveiro

During the 20th century, the seagrass area in the Ria de Aveiro experienced a sharp decline due to intensive economic activities and uncontrolled effluent discharges. Given the significant loss of seagrass habitat and the existence of a degraded area in the Ria de Aveiro characterized by a well-defined contaminant gradient in some areas, work is underway to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of seagrass restoration in the Aveiro lagoon.
