Zostera marina

The ‘ESRA Marina Network’ was founded by on 19th February 2026 by Dr Riccardo Pieraccini (Universiteit Gent) and Dr Katrin Rehlmeyer (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen). The network is seeking to reinvigorate knowledge sharing across the European Zostera marina restoration community.

Riccardo Pieraccini

Network Coordinator

Riccardo is a seagrass researcher working at the interface of fundamental biology and applied ecology, with a focus on Zostera marina. His work centres on seed physiology and recruitment—how germination and early establishment are regulated (including by hormonal and light cues), and what these mechanisms mean for population persistence, recovery, and restoration.

Katrin Rehlmeyer

Network Coordinator

Katrin is a the postdoctoral project lead of the Programmatic Approach to Great Waters (Programmatische Aanpak Grote Wateren) which is exploring restoration possibilities of sub tidal Zostera marina in the Dutch Wadden Sea. She is an active member of the Global Seagrass Nursery Network (GSNN).
